What is market capitalization?
Market capitalization is a way of measuring the size of a company in financial markets. Market capitalization is calculated multiplying the number of shares a company has issued, by the price of an individual share.
For example, a company that has issued 25 million shares which are $40 each will have a market capitalization of $1 Billion.
Market capitalization is commonly used to determine the weight of a stock in an index – the larger the company by market cap, the more of it will be included in the index.
