What is a stock exchange?
An exchange is a marketplace where people who want to sell company stocks or financial instruments like ETFs can meet up with people who want to buy them.
Exchanges are usually heavily regulated and have the responsibility to ensure that buying and selling can take place smoothly and fairly.

Exchanges have multiple roles to play in ETFs – they are the place where an ETF can be listed (put on the shelf) for buying or selling, but exchanges can also calculate market indexes which can then be replicated by ETFs (such as the Nasdaq 100 for example).
