ETFs vs. Mutual Funds: What is the difference?
ETFs are a lot like mutual funds, but the main differences are that:
- Investors can buy or sell shares of ETFs in real-time throughout the trading day, unlike mutual funds that only trade once a day.
- ETFs tend to have lower minimum investments. An ETF's minimum investment is the price of a single share, which can be in the 10’s or 100’s of dollars, depending on the ETF. A mutual fund may require a few hundred or even thousands of dollars for an investor to buy in.
- ETFs also offer more frequent and transparent valuations. ETFs provide real-time pricing, so you can monitor how the value is changing throughout the trading day. Mutual funds aren’t priced until the market is closed, so you don't know what price you will pay until after you've placed your trade.
- ETFs also have more transparent reporting. ETFs reveal their full holdings on a daily basis, unlike mutual funds which often disclose only the top 10 largest constituents, and even then, often on a delayed basis.
