What is the Primary Market?
The primary market is the place where new ETF units are created. This process involves trading firms called ‘Authorized Participants’ buying the underlying securities and then packaging them as ETF units for sale on the secondary market. You can think of it as the factory which mixes up all the ingredients in a salad in the right combination before the salad is shipped to the shops.
For example, when creating a unit for an S&P 500 ETF, the Authorized Participant will go into the market and buy the right among of each of the 500 underlying stocks and then package them as an ETF for sale to investors on the secondary market.
