What is a portfolio?

A portfolio is simply a combination of different financial assets that you own. These assets can include stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate and cash - alongside ETFs and other types of funds.   

How you decide to design your portfolio will be based on many personal factors, including your investment goals, how much risk you are able to take, how long you want to invest for and when you plan to retire.

Spreading your investment across different asset classes can help provide diversification to your portfolio - reducing the impact of any individual asset that falls in value.  

Monitoring the performance of the different assets will help you determine if your portfolio is delivering what you expect. If you want to make changes, you can buy and sell the components whenever you wish.
