The custodian is a bank that plays an important role in the running of ETFs – they hold the assets on behalf of the investor and manage the money going in and out of the fund.
The custodian also works with the ETF administrator, accountant and distributor, to ensure the process goes as planned.

An ETF custodian can provide other services to the fund such as securities lending and cash management. When an ETF uses a securities lending program (lending shares to the market for shorting at a cost), the proceeds are generally shared between the lending agent and the shareholders of the ETF - adding to the total return of the fund.
An ETF’s uninvested cash can also be managed by the custodian.
