What are Non-Transparent ETFs?

Non-transparent ETFs are a very new concept, introduced in the US in 2020.

ETFs have to disclose exactly what stocks they hold, and how much of each they own. This information helps you decide whether or not you want to buy it. However, active managers may not want to give away the secrets to their strategy, and so non-transparent or semi-transparent ETFs were introduced whereby the stocks they own are only shown partially, or on a delayed basis.

So far there are only a handful of non-transparent ETFs and the documentation should be clear about this: “This ETF is different from traditional ETFs. Traditional ETFs tell the public what assets they hold each day. This ETF will not. This may create additional risks for your investment.”

This doesn’t mean that non-transparent ETFs are fundamentally better or worse than fully transparent ETFs, but it does mean that you have different information to use when you are deciding whether to invest.
