Understanding ETFs

What are ETF Share Classes?

ETF issuers can offer ETFs in multiple share classes with different characteristics, such as their:

  • Currency: USD, EUR or GBP for example so that investors can buy the share in their own currency
  • Hedging policy: Returns are either converted to the share class currency or hedged so that variations in currency exchange rates do not impact returns in investors’ currency
  • Dividend policy: Accumulating or Distributing. The difference comes down to how they handle dividend payments from the underlying shares. “Accumulating share classes” reinvest the dividends payments from the fund’s holdings while “Distributing share classes” pay them out to investors as a regular income stream.

The choice of which ETF share class to buy is an important factor to consider as it can impact your long-term returns and change the types of taxes you might need to pay (depending on where you live).
