The trend is linked to multiple factors, including the ongoing global chip shortages and better-than-expected results from main chip players like ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ON) and Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (Nasdaq: AOSL). In addition to that, the White House pressed Congress to pass legislation that would provide $52 billion to help computer chip manufacturers dodge additional shortages.
Travel and leisure stocks inched higher last week after data showed strong U.S. jobs growth in October and Pfizer's COVID-19 pill update.
U.S. employment increased more than expected last month as the Labor Department's report revealed, COVID-19 infections over the summer subsided, providing optimism going into the fourth quarter. Pfizer's experimental antiviral pill for COVID-19 showed it reduced by 89% the chances of hospitalization or death for adults at risk of developing severe symptoms.
Strong employment numbers and subsiding health risks were a good combo for the travel and leisure stocks and lifted related ETFs subsequently, including HANetf U.S. Global Jets UCITS ETF, U.S. Global Jets ETF and HANetf Airlines, Hotels and Cruise Lines UCITS ETF, which gained +10.37%, +10.25%, and +7.41% respectively.
The positive updates, along with better-than-expected results also pumped U.S. small cap stocks, which earnings tend to be more sensitive to changes in economic growth. Related ETFs joined the top ranks, including Pacer US Small Cap Cash Cows 100 ETF (CALF), Invesco S&P SmallCap 600 UCITS ETF (USML), and iShares S&P SmallCap 600 UCITS ETF (ISP6), gaining +9.23%, +6.51%, and +6.51% respectively.
