Japan's Nikkei closed at a staggering 34-year peak on Friday. The flagship index was up 4.31% for the week, bringing its year-to-date performance to 15.01% compared with 4.94% for the S&P 500. This is the third positive week in a row as the dollar was stabilizing following the largest drop in U.S. retail sales since the beginning of the pandemic - down 0.8% in January - sparking speculation of a potential rate cut in June.

BOJ's Accommodative Monetary Policy

Governor Kazuo Ueda of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) conveyed on Friday that the bank's monetary policy is likely to remain accommodative, even with the cessation of negative interest rates. This statement, resonating with recent assurances from BOJ officials, has had a significant impact on the yen, indirectly propelling the Nikkei's climb.

Dollar/Yen Dynamic Supports Nikkei

The exchange rate between the dollar and yen has found a steady grounding around the 150 level. This stability is particularly beneficial for the Nikkei, as it draws support from ongoing corporate reforms and the promise of continued prosperity for exporters.

Japan's Strategic Edge

As a pivotal exporter, Japan reaps the benefits of a relatively weak yen against the dollar, which stands as a considerable advantage. Coupled with the nation's low inflation rate, Japan maintains stable production costs. Consequently, revenues from exports are on an upward trajectory, further stimulating economic growth and bolstering the Nikkei's performance. Japan sorely needs it as the country slipped into recession at the end of last year, relinquishing its position as the world's third-largest economy to Germany.
