A surprising twist occurred last week as long-term government bonds faced a downturn, revealing the implications for ETF investors. With equity markets and cryptocurrencies showing signs of recovery, the shift in bond markets underscores diverse market dynamics.

The Surprising Reversal in Long-term Government Bonds

A significant talking point this week has been the unexpected reversal in the outlook for long-term government bonds. The increase in Treasury yields underlines the inverse relationship between bond yields and prices, a fundamental principle of the bond market. Specifically, the yields on the 10-year and 30-year Treasuries experienced a substantial rise of 15 basis points, highlighting the volatility and changing sentiments in the financial landscape.

Impact on Long-term Government Bond ETFs

This rise in Treasury yields had a profound impact on ETFs focused on long-term government bonds. Given their longer durations, these ETFs are more sensitive to changes in interest rates. Consequently, a notable decrease of 1.73% was observed in these ETFs last week, in contrast to a relatively milder drop of 0.59% across government bonds with varying maturities.

The Invesco US Treasury Bond 10+ Year UCITS ETF – EUR Hedged (TRUD) and the Amundi US Treasury Bond Long Dated UCITS ETF – EUR Hedged (U10H). These ETFs, which had previously been praised for their performance, experienced downturns of 2.26% and 2.09% respectively over the past week, placing them on the less favorable end of the investment spectrum.
