Chinese Tech stocks were among the world’s worst performing in the third quarter as government crackdowns hammered everything from e-commerce to after-school tutoring and gaming. Slowing economic growth and China Evergrande Group’s debt woes added to concern.

Last week, bargain hunters came in for a slice of depressed Chinese technology shares like Alibaba, JD.com, Pinduoduo and Baidu among other, lifting ETFs with exposure to Chinese technology or large cap stocks including, HSBC Hang Seng TECH UCITS ETF (HSTE), KraneShares Hang Seng TECH Index ETF (KTEC) and KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF which gained more than 5.5% each.
Xtrackers LPX Private Equity Swap UCITS ETF (XLPE) and NBI Global Private Equity ETF (NGPE) gained +6.65% and +5.53 respectively last week. These two ETFs invest in publicly listed private equity companies who engage in a variety of private equity activities, such as powerhouses Blackstone, KKR & Co. and Partners Group Holding AG. The release of better-than-expected earnings from Blackstone (profit nearly doubles) and KKR & Co. recent deals (buys Kobalt Capital's music rights portfolio for $1.1 bln) lifted XLPE and NGPE to our weekly top 10 ETFs list.
Simplify Volt Pop Culture Disruption ETF (VPOP) rose as much as 47% last Friday on news that Digital World Acquisition Corp. ($DWAC), one of its largest holdings, will merge with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed media company, the Trump Media & Technology Group. VPOP closed the week up by 10%.
Euphoria in crypto markets was revamped last week with the launch of the first U.S. Bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO). The total cryptocurrency market cap grew from $2.45 to $2.58 trillion, with Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market cap reaching an all-time high price of $66,974.77 on October 20, 2021.
In the crypto ETF space, VanEck Vectors Solana ETN, VanEck Vectors Polkadot ETN and 21Shares Polkadot ETP were the top performers last week with +33.26%, +14.12% and +11.88% gains respectively.
