After a blockbuster year for thematic investing, Thematic ETFs brace for another wave of investors hungry for themes, trends, and megatrends shaping the future. In 2022's first week of trading, 3 Thematic ETFs had the best allure, drawing a combined $332 million.
Welcoming in $122 million, the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) is off to a good start. 2021’s rough journey for KWEB didn't seem to budge bargain-hunting investors who think the worst has already passed. Last year, the fund, which provides exposure to Chinese internet and internet-related technology, plunged after a series of Chinese regulatory crackdowns hammered down some of the fund's largest holdings. KWEB ended the year down by -50%.

In second place, Emerge ARK Global Disruptive Innovation ETF (EARK) attracted $112 million of net flows. The fund is invested in disruptive companies like Tesla (7.9%), Roku (6.2%), and Teladoc Health (5.9%) to name a few. 2021 wasn't very kind for EARK either after investors jumped ship on extreme valuation concerns. The fund sank by -22% last year, giving "buy the dip" investors a reason to jump back in.
The Mirae Asset TIGER China Electric Vehicle Solactive ETF (371460) was the third most popular Thematic ETF last week, netting $97 million of net flows. The fund tracks the Solactive China Electric Vehicle Index and provides exposure to companies critical to the development of electric vehicles (EVs) in China. According to initial market estimates, more than 3 million EVs were sold in China in 2021, significantly higher than the 1.27 million sold in 2020. The impressive improvement and the positive outlook for 2022 got investors early onboard ride number "371460".
